Drops - February 24

Lots of quality records made their way into tangible retailers yesterday, but Mr. Budden's long-awaited underground LP is the biggest, best fish. When we say the streetz have been waiting for this one, we're not kidding.

Thus, I defer to DJ Trakjacka, who hit me with all sorts of leaks during the college years, and who will periodically be reviewing albums via texts. The following is verbatim, messaged in five straight text blasts:

"When they gave Budden a 5 for lyrics they weren't joking...the order of it is suspect bc the end bangs alot harder than the beginning...the beats are "too Indy" at times but after first listen I'm mindblown...They are givin Budden 5 for lyrics...this us spot on. Plus he stays with the theme all the way thru, which may actually hurt...there was still room for a posse cut and a female track...beats are ok/good but some are too "Indy." the order is also weird, as the we of half if the album bangs alot harder...overall, solid 4.6...I loved it, bias admitted"

Truth.
B Real - Smoke and Mirrors
Cypress Hill's ace drops first official solo record after a string of three applauded Gunslinger mixtapes.

Earth Wind & Fire -
The Promise
21st Century albums by '70s soul masters are a ripe recipe for bullshit. Traditionally speaking, of course. Then again, they're also a ripe recipe for works I'll never bother checking out unless Rolling Stone's editorial board brings it to my attention.

Joe Budden -
Padded Room

Seriously, DJ Trakjacka knows his shit and we almost always agree on music. Sports loyalties, that's another beast altogether.

8Ball -
Memphis All Stars
Consistent fire, southern goodness.

Havoc - Havoc
"After yo album flop/ you gon be on Koch," was the once potent Lil Flip jab at southern, rival rappers. Then he signed to the New York-based indie as well.
Really, the label sticks to quality, quality albums and Mobb Deep's Havoc is a quality artist; looking forward to getting into this one.

Knaan - Troubadour
Pensive, political stuff from Somali-Canadian slam poet turned rapper. Looking at the critical consensus, he's averaging out a solid B+ among the big outlets; he has a Marley brother and a Metallica guitarist on his shit, but I'm looking at the Mos Def track first and foremost as a potential gateway drug.

UPDATE: Mos joint is fire.

Lil Scrappy -
Silence and Secrecy: Black Rag Gang
Fresh off marijuana charges and being stabbed, Atlanta's club hero returns.

MC Lars - The Gigantic Robot Kills
Interesting art.
He's the precedent: a dorm room white boy that made Asher Roth possible with buzz dating back to 2003. We're talking when I was a college freshman; dude rapped about his "iGeneration" and garnered relative notoriety by lauding the emo boom of the period (when every major label was pouring money into bands like Dashboard Confessional and Early November) by making up a band called Hearts That Hate.

Z-Ro -
Greatest Hits
Absolutely vital listening.
