The MTV news bit is ostensibly about Drake finally signing with a
record label (Lil Wayne's Young Money imprint. Mistake? Yes?), but it's
really a choreographed circle jerk wherein Bun B, Talib Kweli and
others show the buzz magnet some love. Also, Jay gave him a personal
shout-out at the BET awards and Nas recently likened him to "fresh
water."
This is the point where we, as rap fans in 2009, take a step back, put our hands out and say "Album, please." (Looking at you Cool Kids). Here he is on MTV's new, live, daily, web 3.0 talk show, "It's On with Alexa Chung" (she's cute, right?) discussing his new deal and the forthcoming, Kanye West-directed video for "Best I Ever Had." Props to her for whipping out the Degrassi footage, lol.
Drake's debut, Thank Me Later is supposed to be dropping this fall. We're holding him to that.

MTV misspelled Kweli's name. Talid. Genius.
"Not Drake himself, but the fact that EVERYONE is seemingly head over heels in love with him... "
YES! I completely agree. It's definitely a phenomenon that's going on in hip-hop. I think fans have been clamoring for so long for a rapper that can actually rap. Wait, wait. Let me rephrase that... a rapper with MAINSTREAM APPEAL that can actually rap. He's very user-friendly. He's got the same swag, wordplay and entertainment value as Lil' Wayne. But Drake can go where Lil' Wayne can't: the eyes & ears of the easily-offended conservative.
Ladies love him because he's got that confidence and looks (no homo, but he's mad over-rated in that category). Fellas love him because he's got lines for days. Dare I say... he's even better than Wayne? Yes I do dare. Yes I do.
I don't know who kept their ears out for this guy, but I'm pretty sure Drake already knew how he was gonna market himself. And damn he did a good job at it. I mean, who would have known where you can find a clean, marketable version of Lil' Wayne? Apparently, you find him in Canada on the set of a Nickelodeon teen drama.
Drake is it. There's no stopping him. All Young Money needs now is a great-looking Latino from Los Angeles. And I thiiiink I know where to find him....
Lol.
