Raekwon ft. Ghostface, Inspectah Deck, Method Man - Flying Daggers

Thumbnail image for kwon.jpg

Incredible.

Ghost and Rae obliterating matter; Deck competently keeping pace; Meth sweating charisma and big upping O.D.B.; Kung-Fu samples; lines about getting crack money and rocking fitted hats.

So like all the best Wu cuts, basically, only it's a Dilla beat.

Really? Really??

From the first sentence of the new diss track: "Now I'm pissed off."

New(ish) Drake leak - "Do it Now"

drake-mannion.jpg
We'll cede the floor to Fader on this one:

The song is clearly unfinished and aside from Drake mumbling some melodies to himself where the chorus should be, the beat sounds like Ryan Leslie playing around with the "galactic organ" setting on his keyboard (which is how I imagine he starts all his songs), but I feel like I've probably listened to this a hundred times between Saturday and now. As is, "Do It Now" is great and it sounds like the makings of a song Drake was born to make. I'm not sure where the title comes from, cause I don't think he even says the phrase, but Drake, if you're listening, please finish this shit. Do it now.

Listen Now.

Colin Munroe live (not really) - "Will I Stay"

There's a handful of new school r&b crooners coming up with the likes of the talented Mr. Munroe, Mike Posner et al. In the mixtape age, frankly it's just plainly exciting to think that genre might actually become fresh again. Be sure to dl Colin's excellent tape from last year, The Unsung Hero, which features Black Milk, Wale, Mickey Factz, Blaqstarr, Skyzoo, Izza Kizza, Bob Dylan and an early Drake verse.

* The above video is strangely dubbed with the studio version of the song. Maybe the audio was shitty? Anyways, proppers to Dallas Penn.

Cool artwork still matters.

Spotted along various, prominent blogs I had no idea who Smarts was. Listened based on artwork. Nice.

He's one of those inordinately talented, degree carrying, North Carolina rappers who keeps his music grounded in vibrant, soulful hip-hop. He's in a solid crew, Kooley High, which like you I've heard of but haven't bothered hearing. Oh, and his debut project, F' alex, drops today.

Peter Hadar ft. Theophilus London - Want U 4 Myself

peter_theophilus_3-450x450.jpg

We're fans.

Theophilus got the dream slot at SXSW: ushering in patrons with his pretentious, kinda gay clubby shit before Kanye & G.O.O.D. parlayed cameos and lights into headlines. But it was really smart, playful, kinda gay clubby shit.

During the event, Bun B dug on Mr. London's performance so much, he insisted London introduce him. SXSW's worth to artists encapsulated in one moment.

Mr. West's highlight reel

kanye rappings.jpg

Complex runs down an overlooked category:

Songs featuring 'Ye, wherein he subtly showed up and stole the show. These are not discography cuts or his production, but rather speak to a period during which emcees would invite Kanye on songs with hopes of scoring beats. Feeling relatively safe, they'd coast on cuts and hungry Kanye ate them alive. Makes me nostalgic for 2003.

We can't cosign the entire piece, however, because they hate on Slum Village midway through the list. Unacceptable protocol.

wale blue hoody.jpg

Reportedly an official album leak from Attention: Deficit. Best Kept Secret on the beat.

That's right heads, Gucci Mane made the album. Cause for concern?

Maybe a little. Wale's excellent recent work also feels like a carefree hurrah through East Coast hip-hop before succumbing to industry formula and serving up a pu pu platter of regional flavors and major names. These works largely lack focus, cohesion, merit.

D.O.M.M.

ti-vibe-april.jpg

According to a fundamentally sound Jonah Wiener piece in Slate, music magazines like Vibe, Blender, Rolling Stone and Spin are folding and suffering massive layoffs for three key reasons:

  • Fading star power across the musical landscape.
  • Customer servicing.
  • Facebook.

I'd like to offer a fourth general point: music fans never liked us. The biggest music fans in the world write to eat, the second tier of music fans hate music writers. We're seen as pretentious, guarded tastemakers who've long yielded too much influence. Any and every artist, having read negative comments, fires back and rallies his or her respective base in doing so.

"Fuck critics, you can kiss my whole asshole."

The fact major names heavily filter public images at will nowadays fails to carry any urgency or red flags because the electorate inherently sided with the artist.

As Weiner puts it, "If [music magazines] were to disappear entirely, people would still find out about new music, after all, and criticism would doubtless live on, online and in general-interest publications."

Sadly for most, that's enough.

New Grouch & Eligh video ft. Slug - BOOM

During a recent, horizontal road trip to New Orleans, the inevitable albums of the decade conversation killed a pair of hours between ATG's insiders. If we're talking 20 albums in hip-hop, you have to include an Atmosphere record. They're just too good and important to leave out.

Anyway, here's a video that features Atmosphere's ace, Slug.

The Roots - "How I Got Over"

The Roots continue to prove themselves as the hardest working Hip Hop band in the business. Not only are they working for "The Man" (Jimmy Fallon) as his house band, they're still touring all over the place, and even found time to work on new material. "How I Got Over" is the title track, and first single, to the legendary band's next full-length album.

The title track plays to The Root's current self-proclaimed image as the "Biggest Underdog Group" in the game. It's soulful semi-bluesy song about the best advice anyone could give on how to make it in the streets.

The album drops September 29th.

Beastie Boys, the old school dogs who've kept on kicking, revealed today that Adam Yauch, bka MCA, has a form of throat cancer. Also, their new album Hot Sauce Committee Part. 1 has been postponed and will not be dropping Sept. 15 as planned. Rhymefest will hurt you

getty_rhymefest_405.jpg

Who pissed in 'Fest's flakes? The battle-hardened emcee seems to have been on something of a war path this year, first taking aim at Charles Hamilton (before it was cool) then dropping an aggressive video for homophobic street single "Chicago" which many believed contained a jab at Pharell. Last night on Twitter, Rhymefest reaffirmed his current role as leader of the putdown parade, taking aim at Beyonce before segueing into a slight at Jay-Z.

@RHYMEFEST:Yo I like beyonce as an artist but it's time she put clothes on. She's past having to look like a slut to apeal

We don't claim to have any insight at all into 'Fest's brain, but we guess he's referring to B's string of diva-themed, leotard-laden videos promoting I Am... Sasha Fierce? One thing is clear though, after dissing Mrs. Big Homie, the chicagoan and one-time Kanye collaborator couldn't resist a chance to fling mud at the head of the household.

@RHYMEFEST: As far as J, any man who let's his woman basically strip on camera for niggaz need to be talked 2

It's safe to say the odds of Jay responding are slim as always, but that won't stop 'Fest, Game and any other rapper seeking a little publicity in advance of this fall's Blueprint 3 from trying.

New Kid Sis single, "Right Hand Hi"

rhh_sm-1.jpg

Chi-Town's favorite Club-Hop MC is finally back on the music scene with a new single and her debut on the way. Kid Sister's freshman effort will now be titled Ultraviolet, instead of Dream Date, the album's original name. Kid Sister also replaced a handful of songs with new material. She claims that newer material will help the album sound more "cohesive".

Kid Sister gives her fans their first taste of the new material with the leadoff single, "Right Hand Hi". While it's nothing groundbreaking, it's still very refreshing considering we haven't heard anything from her in many months. It's a funky, high tempo, electro-hop track about having fun in the moment at a party. A familiar theme and sound Kid Sis' fans should have no problem getting into. Ultraviolet is due October 6th on Downtown Records.

Retrovirals: iLL Cypher with Canibus, Big Pun, DMX, Mos Def, Mic Geronimo, & John Forte circa 97'

After the nostalgia set in from watching this video we here at ATG pose a question to you, what the hell happen to the Cypher battles? Once a staple of the of Hip Hop culture it has now faded away into the ether. It's been replaced with the likes of self-depreciating SMACK DVDs and a bunch of no-name pedestrians battling over who has the fattest mama (Thanks, but no thanks MTV). No longer are Hip Hop's top players testing each other skills head to head. Instead, their standing from the sidelines shouting from their camps.

Thankfully now, we have technology to preserve dope moments like these for anyone in the world who still gives a damn to see. Mos Def, who was arguably the winner of the cypher above, recently challenged some of today's top rappers to a Battle for New Orleans on Hot 97. Unfortunately it has seemed to fall on deaf ears but we can always hope.

Film: Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince

HP6.jpg

"Half-Blood Prince" is easily in the top tier of the Potter films.

Not saying all that much, I guess: the first two disposable, unwatchable, literal fluff, the fifth one a botched synopsis of the longest, most compelling book that contained maybe 10 minutes with THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX.

I'd rank it between Alfonso Cuaron's third installment and Mike Newell's "Goblet of Fire." For me, "Goblet" has been the series crown jewel up to this point. A loaded, colorful, lonnng book whose film adaptation chose selected bits (Quidditch World Cup, Yule Ball, Triwizard Tourmanent's stages) and vibrantly brought them to life, gave them necessary screen time. When Cedric died, his body teleported into the stadium in front of his father - poignancy and poetry man, the series' most heartbreaking moment.

"Half-Blood Prince" gets the rare distinction of being the first film more enjoyable than the book. It's also the first release post-print finale so extra kudos are in order as most viewers suspiciously comb for foreshadowing, knowing the ultimate fate of all these characters.

The book itself has three major but fairly straightforward plot points (Horace Slughorn, horcruxes, the betrayal) and filler. Onscreen, the filler is compelling, beautiful, vibrant. I pictured Slughorn like a fat Teddy Roosevelt because of how he's illustrated, but the Slughorn adaptation is far more interesting. Slughorn is the loud, proud, self-aggrandizing academic not just proud of his student's future accomplishments, but how said accomplishments reflect on his stature. He's a delightful drunk.

This is Potter's "Empire" moment and they nailed the sadness and darkness. This is Potter's adult moment we're served a perfect cocktail of hormones and hallucinogens.

And I don't know if anyone doesn't already know this, but the ending, knowing it's coming, still impactful. To quote George Costanza, "It was a helluva thing when Spock died."

Perhaps there's a bit too much foreshadowing (Snape and Dumbledore talking shop in the study) and the Half-Blood Prince revelation was botched and obvious; and we missed some opportunities for big moments: no white tomb, no wizard battle wherein Fenir fucks up Bill's face (and they teased the shit outta Fenir, it was like that Simpsons episode, "Marge, the little Chinese guy hasn't done anything yet, when he does you know it's gonna be good,") but I loved every bit of what we got.

Making book seven two movies is still a lame idea.

Now back to hip-hop....

What is this? Two weeks ago?

Overexposure is just around the corner. Or maybe we've arrived.

It doesn't matter, really, I'm still bumping So Far Gone, but my concern is the overwhelming love and consensus: Pitchfork, the head blogs we refresh 10 times a day, statesmen like Bun B, FM radio, dumb girls in short dresses, younger siblings, us.

Very elite company, hope Thank Me Later delivers.

By the way, why do rappers name rap albums before recording a note of music? No other genre does this.

Slaughterhouse = Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I, Royce Da 5'9''

Here's an interview from Rock the Bells: Chicago done by DJ Booth. We're admittedly late to the game on this supergroup of shelved, bitter thirtysomethings, but this album is going to be monstrous.

Four disgruntled veterans hogging for the mic, talking down on the industry and calling out Jay-Z. It could get out of hand.

I've always found Joe and Joell to be uninteresting, competent emcees: regional, lyrical, petty, minimal charisma, punch lines galore but generally flat. Royce and his flagrant new style is incredible. Crooked I is just alright for me dog.

The crooning Brit balladeer likes to bite Sting's swagger and pen songs for the arenas. That's all fine and good, but I never realized why dude ended up singing the "Paranoid" hook.

Seems fairly obvious though: Mr. Hudson is actually a band with success and buzz overseas. And Mr. Hudson the solo guest entity we've accepted in hip-hop is a records man, engineer. Couple in Kanye's desire and quest to stray from the norm and the G.O.O.D. signing is an obvious move.

This song is aight; album drops August 3.

The Ecstatic is overwhelmingly the most dense, verbose album of the year. A spectacular achievement and how to for aspiring lyricists everywhere and easily the best Mos LP since Black On Both Sides. Duh.

Here's a lengthy feature from this month's Filter. I haven't seen a rapper on a major music publication since Wayne fronted Rolling Stone. Kind of a bummer.

Read Cord Jefferson's feature here and here. Shouts to Eskay for scanning this bad boy.

Bored at work?

ATG has corralled a bunch of solid fluff obit pieces about Michael. These essays are basically easy, lazy bits of content and as Slate pointed out earlier, products of editors desperate to keep feeding readers exclusive bits and forced angles on big cultureal stories.

Act like you can resist.

Retrovirals: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - "1st of The Month"

Here's to stacking that entry level paper.

"Oh God how I love when the 1st come around
Now I'm feelin' black and mild, headed cross town
'Cause niggas the 1st to get celebrated
Rushin' to the block cause I wanna get faded
Lookin' all wild cause I'm getting me hair braided

Consequence, Kanye West, John Legend - Whatever You Want

goodreal.jpg

The first single from Consequence's upcoming record, ConsTV, features his forefront hogging friends.

The beat is sparse, light, accented with typical club laser effects so prevalent on, well, most hip-hop singles nowadays. Kanye and Con rap in succinct, defined patterns: trading four bars the whole way, each bit capably aiming for Blackberry digits.

Legend is in his comfort zone, ever the balladeer, and smoothly segues the flow despite his light Autotune.

Credit to the dope boyz for uploading this one.
