In 2009, if there's any producer who looks to respect and uphold that fundamental symbiosis above all else, it's a guy called Exile. And if we were to make a list of the freshest, most vital beatsmiths working today, without a doubt he'd be near the top of the pile.
Fittingly, Exile first entered the wider consciousness not on his own, but with another bright spot on hip-hop's horizon, Blu, the fellow Cali native and Freshman 10 alumnus. Their 2007 breakthrough collaboration Below the Heavens took even the most jaded Internet forums by storm. Its modern interpretations of classic bounce and soul sounds led many to declare the album a new classic. We caught up with the hip-hop enabler extraordinaire laying low at a showcase that didn't have Time Square going nuts, and rapped with him about his busiest year, who he looks up to the most, and getting back in the studio with Blu...
First, I'm really curious about what projects you have going on at the moment. I know you've made a name for yourself doing a lot of really interesting collaborations.
Yeah, yeah. I just was in the studio with Pharohe Monch, did a couple of tracks with him. Me and Blu are working on another album together. I've got another album coming with my original partner Aloe Blac, too. So it's been good man, keeping busy.
Another album with Blu? Word? Any title yet or details?
Nah, nah we haven't gotten that far yet. But we've been making some new music together and we're excited about it.
When can we expect it?
Umm, probably not til 2010.
Tell me about what it was like working with Pharohe and how that happened. Seems like a good match.
It was really cool, man. I mean Pharohe is definitely one of the top emcees that I would want to work with. He's one of the most well rounded people that has inspired me and that I look up to THE most. So to work with him and have him be responsive to my music and the things that I'm doing is like a dream for sure.
Your MPC YouTube videos seem to have helped get your name out there a bit. With the way the Internet has democratized hip-hop and put so many rappers at the forefront, seems like it would be a lot more difficult for a producer to get noticed.
Yeah I think it is, man. I'm just really thankful to even have the opportunity to do this and have just been open to a lot of opportunities. I'm definitely happy with where I'm at and the things I've been able to do so far. I've got some more videos planned, too.
A lot of people may not know, but you were around for years before Below the Heavens became this huge thing in the underground. What do you think it was about that album that really broke through and spoke to people?
Hip-hop is a youthful music. I found this cat who at the time was doing his own thing, doing his own beats and I helped him tell his story. The chemistry was right, the beats were right, the rhymes were right and it happened. I think we were both at the right time in our lives.
How did you two first hook up?
We were both part of this larger crew called Science Project that wanted to start a label with Emenon, a guy called Miguel and Blu. So I heard about Blu before I met him and went and saw a show before I heard any of his music. I was just really impressed with the performance and his charisma on stage and started visualizing what we would make together. I had a project I was doing called Dirty Science and put him on it, and after our first song we worked on, we both started seeing what our album would look like. From there we just did it.
Who else is out there that you're listening to that has caught your ear?
Jay Electronica, Pharohe Monch, Sa-Ra, ADaD, Cashaun, Sean Price, Black Milk. My homie Blame One, I executive produced his album Days Chasing Days. I love listening to that.
Who are the producers that have inspired you or that you look up to?
Definitely guys like Marley Marl, Pete Rock, Primo. They all took rhymers who weren't known and presented them to the world. That's what I'm trying to do, but with my own style. Ya know what I mean?
