Virginia's all-time greatest cocaine gurus, Clipse, strolled through Central Texas last night and rocked a sold out crowd at Ace's Lounge. Local firestarters Kevin Jack, Drastik, The League of Extraordinary Gz and Vonnegutt opened the night.

SXSW 2010: Saturday

The home stretch of the South by Southwest music conference.

Hustlepalooza was filled with, you know, hustlers and standout performances from Skyzoo and GLC; Freddie Gibbs sipped Hennessey on the rocks and spoke candidly to ATG about the game's perils; weather turned grey and murky and cold as Bone Thugz returned to rock the Fader Fort; the Lawyers 4 Musicians Party at Ace's, in its sophomore inception, jammed out with Kidz In the Hall and The Cool Kids although the Dilated Peoples delegate canceled; Mos Def energized sympathizers at Red Bull Thre3Style, an open air block party; I didn't get into Perez Hilton's party either.

Still sorting out the notes, stay tuned for detailed interviews and summations. Hit the jump for one last batch of pretty pictures from our photographer. It's been a journey.

SXSW 2010: Friday

The third music day is the messiest during South by Southwest: the most people are converged in Austin, the biggest parties become impenetrable, there's tons of wonderful shows. It's when I start making dumb calls: key networking opportunities and interviews are passed for the fourth annual reunion show from a local punk band, an open bar at The Parish and terrible modern rock wins over important, tastemaking shit.

ATG chats with Kid Sister about Paul Wall's generosity and her new tattoo and Bin Laden Blowin' Up about playing the Nahright party and Charles Hamilton's production.

During the evening, official showcases are left unattended as I'm with friends and everyone wants to find free drinks. After three days in a washing machine, with an intimidating Saturday of appearances by buzzed about rappers looming, I'm in bed by one.

SXSW 2010: Thursday

Thursday meant scrambled and canceled interviews and hotel lobbies (Bomba Estereo, Ozomatli, Cypress Hill, Choc Quib Town); the stacked Smoking Section and Nahright party (J. Cole, Freddie Gibbs, Freeway, Pill, Wiz Khalifa, Yelawolf, Fashawn); a 12-4 start to my hopeful March Madness bracket; Dam-Funk, The Walkmen and Kid Sister already losing her voice after numerous shows and talking college hoops with a friendly, sharp, depressed Purdue student (the Final Four is in Indianapolis, they were an overpowering team, their best player tore his ACL) at the Mad Decent & IHeartComix Carniville; The GZA finally showing up at Eastbound & Found; Passion Pit and Mayer Hawthorne late at the Fader Fort after party.

SXSW 2010: Wednesday

"Paul Wall and I had lots of beef," Chamillionare recounted to the modest crowd Thursday morning at La Zona Rosa, "No, like, a lot of beef."

The Houston princes proceeded to playfully apologize to each other for a decade of lost collaborations and then the house lights came up. A triumphant final note in a typical, tiring opening South by Southwest day. But let's backtrack.

After worming through the vast Fader Fort wristband pickup line and then jump-starting the afternoon with a flash performance from Danger Mouse and the bro from The Shins's undeniably listenable and pretty new band, Broken Bells, ATG waited around at one of Brooklyn Vegan's numerous bashes with worthy non-hip-hop (Japandroids, Titus Andronicus, Black Angels), vegan ice cream (no matter how offputting veganism is for its blatant disregard towards gloriously greasy Western diets, the cream is just fine), and vodka teas until one of Brooklyn Vegan's photographers confirmed GZA wouldn't make it.

The GZA is not in my top three Wu-Tang Clan members, but he's always been the wordy intellectual and his craftsmanship reputation has played well with all the indie rock collaborations dude's been on since last year. But he's first and foremost a rapper and rappers cancel shows.

Reporters also miss shows because they don't bother to read a Facebook message from performing talent.

Minutes later, I arrived at Phranchyze's well-placed, well-executed cd release party having missed the music part. If you're an Austin artist and you want Austin music fans to support you during SXSW when the world is in their backyard, do something. Phran's event was early, concise (2-6pm), offered drinks, was at a fresh new retailer for rare kicks and tees (aesthetics, son). Also, dude's album is dope.

Anyway, we talked college hoops, reminisced about an era when Texas freestylers would rehash same lines over and over ("I kick ass like 'Tekken'" for instance).

"I like Syracuse man," Phranchyze said, "I like Baylor in the Final Four. I've filled out so many brackets I don't remember. But Robbie Hummel is a bitch."

The proceedings led to interviews in lobbies and back to Fader Fort.

Early on, Fort security told me Nas would be performing during the week. Given his official showcase was Wednesday, and that I didn't see two enormous stars (Damian Marley, his album collaborator) taking in the conference together and going to Chuy's and The Salt Lick, safe money had them as the Wednesday special guest.

"Nas Is Like" set off a firestorm of open bar-fueled party people's hands in the air. So did "NY State of Mind" and "One Love." But it popped off too quick and classic Nasir led to well-received songs from Welcome to Jamrock and then a bunch of stuff no one's heard because it won't be available for public consumption until May. 30 minutes later it was over, time to journey 1.6 miles to La Zona Rosa.

Texas rappers are far and away the most charming rappers. After a half-empty set of mostly stoned dudes watched stoically as an Usher type singer dry humped the air and sang slow jams, the underground conglomerate showcase took off. CD-Rs were thrown into the crowd, 30-plus friends and well-wishers stood around stage taking videophone footage, flipcams saw it all.

Chalie Boy was incredible. Trae was historic. Paul Wall and Chamillionaire, back together after beef tore apart their professional relationship, killed. Only two cuts from 2002's collaborative masterpiece, Get Ya Mind Correct, made the setlist (you know which ones). But it was a rundown of classic freestyles from Swisha House tapes, brilliant remixes, guest spots like "Drive Slow," solo hits.

The ATG Interview: Donnis

Diary Of An Atlanta Brave is the fire mixtape from last year. Today brings XXL cover photo shoots, a deal with Atlantic Records, binge drinking at the Grammys. ATG caught up with Donnis to talk his quick ascent, his Freshman 10 buddies.
]]> ATG: How's the road treating you?

Donnis: Grinding out the tour, so far so good. All of us on stage performing is a nightly highlight. "Gone" is the song getting people amped up, it's hitting radio, people are starting to know it. My first real tour and it's nice to feel like a successful band.

ATG: You've done lots of work with A-Trak. How did you guys become friends?

D: We've known each other for a long time; he's been kinda guy who always knew what I was capable of. We talk all the time.

ATG: Besides yourself, which of your XXL Freshman 10 cohorts do you see maintaining a long, successful career in the rap game?

D: J. Cole. That's simple. He's good. We were at the Grammys together; I was drunk outta my mind. But he's humble, he's good people.

ATG: Tell me about that XXL Freshman photo shoot? Who did you bond with the most? Were there cliques?

D: Nah, I chilled with Pill the most. He's my boy, we've seen each other come up. I'm real cool with Freddie Gibbs. Fashawn was quiet and cool. I text my boys all the time.

ATG: When did you find out you made the list and what was it like keeping it on the low?

D: I was in New York, my manager asked me, Do you wanna be on the cover?

ATG: Tell me about signing with Atlantic, what strings come with the major label?

D: We had labels bid. One of the hardest decisions despite the great moment. Think it was a good day, I spent years sleeping on couches chasing dreams, just wondering. When I got signed I had my dad on a webcam, literally signed the papers, celebrated with champagne and a few weeks later I got a big check

ATG: Speaking of the Atlantic deal, message boards have ripped you for only making XXL list because Drake, Nicki Minaj and Jay Electronica reportedly passed and also because of your management. How does the criticism drive or affect your work?

D: When it comes to management, I mean I don't have a famous cosigner. I'm a kid from Georgia. I don't have a Kanye or Jay or Cudi or any of that shit. I'm on the outside. I'm like a T.I., doing my own thing. He's my role model. I don't feel like I need that. I don't care about negative associations; I've worked and I control my destiny.

ATG: What is the album going to be like? Who are you working with?

D: It'll be a cool record. For now it's just an appetizer. Needlz is my main producer, he's the guy from "I'm Going In," the Lil Wayne record. He's my go to guy. Clinton Sparks will be there, Drummer Boy will be there.

ATG: You have your first SXSW next week and are scheduled for handfuls of crammed shows. You ready? You're on bills with all the buzz guys - Gibbs, Pac Div, Freeway - how are you planning to stand out as a live performer?

D: It's actually my second time out. You now, people come to see Donnis they get Donnis, energy and a party. It's great because right after me they see Gibbs and get gangsta shit. It'll be fun.

ATG: And post-SXSW?

D: Touring and the album; thing is now I can't talk about it album too much because I'm signed. But we're doing what we been doing. The title will be Basic Training, fans can expect more of my story; mixtape was, Hi I'm Donnis and now it's expansion, my story of coming up. Hoping to make an album like ones that inspired me: Late Registration, Trap Muzik, The Blueprint.
I'm still a young rapper in the game. But I know to work. To check vices. Focus on music. I realize what my label expects and wants. I'm doing 20-hour work days.

88 Keys has been at hip-hop's creative fronts since high school and the late '90s. He's been best buddies with Kanye West since 2001. ATG chatted backstage with the rapper, producer, Ralph Lauren enthusiast about the game, wack producers, his misunderstood last album, The Death of Adam.
]]> ATG: On tour again. How is this run going for you?

88 Keys: Tours beeng going well; people show enthusiasm and excitement. It's been crazy. We're trying to multiply energy with each date. Each night is robust. I'm making fans. Exposing fans, exposing myself to people...not in terms of whipping my thing out, but people getting a whole other dimension of who I am. There's never a setlist, it's just a question of interacting with city, reciprocating energy.

ATG: Saw you last time in '08 at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. What's changed since fest for you besides no longer having that hot DJ?

88: On stage there's more self-awareness. More singing along. There's anticipation for songs. I lost the suit, funeral service concept. I realized how many people don't have my album and didn't get it. Had a bad show with Black Starr, realized people want to rock, don't want to be told a story.

ATG: Yeah, you've been with Mos for years. You produced songs on my favorite hip-hop album ever, Black On Both Sides. How is that relationship?

88: My big brothers. I was in high school going to the studio, vibing with D'Angelo and Erykah before they came out. I was in there with The Roots. At the time, Mos was a guy sitting in the corner sizing me up; eventually I met him at a video shoot with De La Soul, gave him a beat tape, he called me, I tracked 12 songs [for Black On Both Sides], only three made the final thing.

ATG: On the subject of big friends, you've been close to Kanye West for a while. He has a generous reputation, but also one of leaving behind guys like Freeway and Rhymefest. Do you worry about not getting returned phone calls?

88: Our relationship was built outside of music. We've been best friends since 2001. There's been times when he doesn't call me back but next week he'll text or email. I know he's in the zone right now. He actually asked for music for his upcoming project but unfortunately, being on the road, I missed opportunity to prepare anything. Hoping by time tour in April is over he's still looking. But it's all love. I can still stay at his house. I'm the kind of dude who understands circumstances.

ATG: Drake had beaming reviews of 'Ye's new album. Have you heard it? Thoughts?

88: No comment on that one.

ATG: Tell me about your last album, The Death of Adam and its success.

88: I put everything I had into the album. I told myself I'd jump on opportunity to make an album on someone's budget. I told myself to be creative and reminiscent of early '90s, Native Tongues stuff I liked. I wanted to do something fun, something you can walk away with. Take home messages beyond tongue-in-cheek playfullness of the funeral concept.

ATG: And now? What are you working on?

88: A mixtape that was a little too good so I decided to make it an album. But I wanted it to be free for everyone so as of today it's a tape tentavtively called: The Alpha Program Version 2.1

ATG: You're a huge Ralph Lauren fan. What's the last item you bought?

88: A collection for my daughters. I haven't shopped for myself in a minute. But [my daughters's] closets are crazy. They're three and one and a half year-olds. The crazy part is Ralph approved my daughters's middle names for part of his collection next year.

ATG: What advice do you have for up and coming producers?

88: Find comfortable euqipment. Master it. Freak it. Know when to upgrade. Don't set up MySpace accounts and start bombarding people with beats unless you're sure. It's funny I still have "Raw Dog," my old Akai MPC 3000, the same one I've had since since age 15. That's all I produce with.

The ATG Interview: Kidz In the Hall

Kidz In the Hall are educated, met the right people, forged a career from a circumstantial project people dug. ATG caught up with them in Grand Rapids, Michigan on a leg of their Crowd Control Tour to talk new album, new fame, being buddies with Just Blaze and recording in Jay-Z's studio.
]]> ATG: So tell me about the Crowd Control Tour you guys are on. How's the first headlining show going?

Double O: It's been an interesting experience traveling with extra rules. We're used to accommodating [other acts on bills], weird to have a tour manager. It's fun, we travel with a sense of accomplishment.

ATG: Any highlights? Favorite moments so far?

Naledge: For me, favorites, has to be Cleveland. The best crowd. But that's because our album dropped yesterday. It was just that high of accomplishment.

DO: Getting to do our crew record, "Fresh Academy," live with guys like Donnis.

N: No matter how much I don't want to do old songs, no matter how tired, it's these crowds and their energy. It's "Groundhog Day," with the shows. They keep us fresh.

ATG: Congrats on the new album, Land of Make Believe. How have you guys progressed on this one?

DO: The first album was an introduction to the world and we wrote from that perspective. We always saw it as a precursor to Naledge's solo project, it was just a last minute bunch of songs with goal to be cohesive. Here, we've been on international tours and every little bit of fame influences. Also location: it's the first time since college that Naledge has been around the whole time. Lastly when we recorded, my vocals were stationary for weeks and gave me plenty of time to analyze.

ATG: Your first album had tons of guests. Why did you make your introduction so top-heavy with others' work? How did you decide who to work with this time around?

N: It has to be natural, not about who has hot songs. We've been lucky enough to know people, to have friends on labels that sing r&b hooks.

DO: The first album was the right place, right time. The concept of The In Crowd was ushering in a new batch of artists, a new generation we believed in. It was for the love. The goal was to get everyone on and have a snapshot of the moment.

N: Now it's about bringing it home.

DO: Yeah, we're finally comfortable on album three.

ATG: You got Just Blaze on "Take Over the World." How did that record come about?

DO: Effortless. The song was 60-70% done and I kept hitting a road block trying to make it sound bigger. A big dance jam. I had the luxury of calling up Just Blaze to talk it over. To realize, you're the missing ingredient get on this track. An hour later it was written.

ATG: Bassline Studios just closed its doors. Historic creative spot for hip-hop. It was in "Fade To Black." What was your experience like working in there?

DO: By the time we arrived it was just an insane amount of history. We mixed our first album there just as Jay-Z started working on "Show Me What You Got" for Kingdom Come. It's where we met Just Blaze, Buckshot, Jay Electronica for the first time. Actually "Take Over the World" was the last record we made [at Bassline]. We ended on a high note. There was a bar right below where all these old Roc-A-Fella Records guys like Rell would hang out and we'd argue about music. We had a dope, five-year run.

ATG: I know you guys keep up with music. What's in your iPod?

DO: Grizzly Bear, Clipse, Mike Snow, Donnis, Bun B, Jay Electronica, K-Os, your Kanyes and Lupes, The Ecstatic is always active, Janelle Monae. Just heard the new Gorillaz, it'll be hard to top those old records.

ATG: What are the plans after SXSW and this spring tour?

DO: Recording. Working. Shooting miscellaneous videos. We premiered one on "106 & Park" last week, more promo stuff man.

ATG: Lastly you guys have been at cusp of evolving face of suburban, electronic hip-hop. What advice do you have for your up and comers?

DO: Don't impersonate, people will find chinks in the armor. It's now about being worldly, you just never know where and how pop moves. And if it's not working where you are, move.

SXSW 2010: Who, what, when, where (free party edition)

As the Interactive component of South by Southwest 2010 winds down, media geeks cut loose. Monday night, locals, badge attendees and locals wearing a badge from two years ago to sneak into prohibited areas scoured downtown for the RVIP (a traveling caravan complete with on-board open bar and karaoke that's supposedly awesome provided its impenetrable Twitter account leads you in the right direction), itself a trendy ticket as famous-for-being-attractive-and-friendly celeb, Ashton Kutcher, reportedly jumped in.

Elsewhere, ATG was shut out of the Beer Camp beer pong invitational for failing to register online beforehand, though there was plentiful, accessible free Shiner. Foursquare threw a tech meltdown at Cedar Door complete with Next singalongs. A bunch of people lined up outside a bunch of clubs for some reason or another.

Without question, the highlight of the evening came courtesy of Thrillist, celebrating the launch of an Austin branch with vodka and hip-hop charmer, Kid Sister.

SXSW 2010: Saturday hip-hop listings

Saturday night you'll either be wiped or hyped after the Fader Fort's secret headliner. It's the home stretch and remember, it's about the music, man. The complete listings after the jump. If you don't have time to scroll, here are the night's top five, most essential shows:

1. Rhymefest / Klub Krucial, 12:15 A.M.

For starters, I'm a big 'Fest fan; El Che is excellent (May 18). Yelawolf has lots of steam and performs earlier. Mainly, I'm curious to see Rhymefest share an audience with the young, inexperienced, line-crossing former prodigy, Charles Hamilton, whom he attacked last year. Rap beef rarely comes full circle.

2. Xzibit / Club DeVille, 11:00 P.M.

One for Los Angeles. A celebration. There's Xzibit the forgotten star, legendary producer DJ Quik, nasty dude Kurupt, and dreadlocked intellectual, Murs. Look elsewhere for buzz, but it won't be as digestable.

3. Don Glover / Esther's Follies, 11:11 P.M.

Glover is a former "30 Rock" writer turned semi-actor (2009's hilarious "Mystery Team," "Community")...turned rapper. His Childish Gambino mixtapes are interesting but generally bad (I mean his name is literally a joke pulled from a Wu-Tang name generator); he's slated to rap at SXSW at a comedy club alongside comedians. In other words, should be funny one way or the other.

4. Mickey Factz / Beauty Bar, 9:25 P.M.

Another 2007-2008 rising star without a proper album but a proven record for live throwdowns. Electro paradise/ douchebag chain The Beauty Bar will be his element, his scene, his moment. Some blipster poppin', v-neck t-shirt jumpin' authenticity.

5. Freeway & Jake One / Emo's Main Room, 12:00 A.M.

Essential show but by now, you should have seen Free and Jake at the Nahright party specifically to avoid having to deal with Emo's again.

SXSW 2010: Friday hip-hop listings

Friday night is a good binge night as the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's opening round meets a fever pitch and the night's best showcases feature talent already doing multiple free day shows. Cut loose. The complete listings after the jump. If you don't have time to scroll, here are the night's top five, most essential shows:

1. Pharoahe Monch / Scoot Inn, 1:00 A.M.

Exception to the intro and a no brainer, Monch is excellent live, his catalog deep. He's a legend and thus far, this is his only slated appearance. Smif N Wessun, Skyzoo and Kidz In the Hall round out an excellent bill. Only downside: Scoot Inn is removed from downtown madness so be prepared to post up here and do little else.

2. The Cool Kids / Mohawk Patio 10:50 P.M.

On the other hand, if you're a wristband patron with a day job, the night's most buzzworthy showcase is at the city's trendiest venue. Yes, The Cool Kids sat on their 2007 buzz and today border irrelevance, but live it's fun and electric and you know the songs. There's also three XXL Freshman (Gibbs, Donnis, Fashawn) and white soul guru, Mayer Hawthorne.

3. Wiz Khalifa featuring Curren$y / Spill, 10:00 P.M.

It's kind of funny to picture self-serious lyrical dude, Lyrics Born, doing his official showcase at a sorority flagship. I'm also curious to see West Coast rambler, Khalifa, perform a duet show with a more talented cohort.

4. Theophilus London / Club DeVille, 11:45 P.M.

Theo is an ATG favorite, but the downside is his multiple free appearances. However, DeVille is a Red River gem of a venue, and if you feel like catching some indie pop bullshit, there's good music in the building (Ra Ra Riot, Neon Indian).

5. Looptroop Rockers / Club 115, 1:00 A.M.

On the international tip, a night of hip-hop from Sweden and New Zealand. Why the hell not?

1. 8Ball & MJG / Barbarella, 1:00 A.M.

It's easy to write off SXSW as a corporate schlock-fest for the industry to leach and network and fuck. Except that, the mere fact Tennesee titans have forthcoming work (Ten Toes Down, April 6) means they'll stop by and destroy a stage. By any measure, this is a good thing. They're heavy, respected, perpetually underrated, essential.

2. Slum Village / Victory Grill, 1:15 A.M.

Detroit night at an East 35 club I was once beaten up at culminates with the city's most influential rap outfit. Check for Elzhi and the undercards: Black Milk and battle-tested ace, Marv Won.

3. Killer Mike / Klub Krucial, 1:00 A.M.

It's pretty simple really, Mike has made 2010's premier mixtape, I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind, Pt. II.

4. GZA / Mohawk Patio, 12:00 A.M.

Hispter alert: the thinking man's favorite Wu-Tang member performs in the city's trendiest venue, with trendy indie bands.

5. Reflection Eternal / Ace's Lounge, 12:25 A.M.

Rap's leading East Coast Jewish journalist, Peter Rosenberg, hosts a night of his favorite East Coast artists culminating with Talib Kweli. Nevermind that New York's last great album was 2003's The Black Album.

The industry blogrolls are slowing down as their creators begin packing for Austin. The complete, official showcase listings for Wednesday after the jump. If you don't have time to scroll, here are the night's top five, most essential shows:

1. Paul Wall & Chamillionaire / La Zona Rosa, 1:15 A.M.

Seperately, they're B-list rap stars slightly beyond their prime. Together, they provided the Houston boom of 2004-2005's backbone and recorded one of the best albums of the decade. It'll be a joyful reunion show.

2. Nas & Damian Marley / Emo's Main Room, 10:00 P.M.

Trust me, Nas at Emo's is no joke. We're talking, run down Illmatic sequentially serious. It'll mostly be a showcase for the upcoming Best Of Both Worlds-inspired duet album, but there's bound to be some big highlights. It's two enormous talents in a tiny room, fireworks are a given.

3. Bun B / Ace's Lounge, 1:15 A.M.

Bun will be all over the place all week. If Rick Ross misses a plane, he'll fill in and wreck. It's what the legend does. He's rap's Cal Ripken. But with rising names like Mike Posner and Big Sean, underground saviors like Freddie Gibbs, and local monsters Kevin Jack and Phranchyze on Wednesday's most stacked showcase, posting up here all night isn't a bad idea.

4. Das Racist / Buffalo Billiards, 9:00 P.M.

Spin, Pitchfork and A Thousand Grams darlings Das Racist will, like Bun, do tons of shows. Buffalo Billiards is a bro bar not known for its live music and it's perfectly located on East 6th, right next to all the vital bars and clubs. Check out the smartass semi-rappers and cross them off the list.

5. Broken Bells / Stubb's, 11:00 P.M.

The star-fuckers special. As the week wore on, we started to get our proverbial groove back. We had the daily routine down (shower, show schedules and RSVPs, NYU panels, food, show 1, show 2, show 3...) and could get anywhere in the city with relative ease. Hip-hop was beginning to make more of a showing as well, with showcases from Nah-Right/On-Smash, Fools Gold, Plug Research and more. Outside the Nah Right show was a madhouse, with an inteminable line and several marquis names being rejected from the door. After chatting up Plain Pat and Maestro out front for a bit, we decided to chuck the deuces and leave the show to every other hip-hop blog you read. This was a good move, because we ended up meeting up with Exile across town. ]]> Theophilus London.

If you follow this site at all, you probably know I'm a fan of the man's work. Theo isn't yet popular enough to command a lot of attention or controversy, but when he gets to that point soon, a lot of people will hate him. (XXL got wind of his breakthrough Internet release This Charming Mixtape and tore it up). But for my money, what Theophilus, and his frequent collaborator Machine Drum, do, represents an inevitable, yet astonishing link between between worlds. TCM was like a eureka moment, wherein the walls between hip-hop, electronica and pop were deleted with a keystroke, forging a new language that post-Kanye, post-Fluxblog music consumers could share in. Like any new utility, it takes a little while to get used to, but repeated spins are rewarded.

Theophilus is a taalll, skinny dude. He marched into the venue towering over his entourage in dark sunglasses and a grey blazer, a '90s basketball cap with a stiff brim fixed at a proper right angle over his dark face. He was the only hip-hop act on the bill for the unofficial Green Label Sound showcase at Brooklyn Bowl, a bowling alley turned concert hall that's become the hottest venue in the borough over the past few months. But as I've already touched on, that kind of booking makes sense. You can put Theophilus on a bill with Chromeo and some buzzy synth pop bands (as Green Label did) and he'll stand out and fit in in all the ways you want him to.

On stage the vocals weren't great. It didn't seem like his mic had been guaged properly and even from our front-row position he sounded pretty washed out. But he was charismatic, dancing and loose. The whole time he performed, the image he invoked wasn't that of a rapper at all, but a front man. Theophilus often says that The Smiths and Morrisey are his biggest influences, but, whereas with other rappers a reference like that might come off as bogus, watching him on stage, you actually kind of believe it.

The show felt short, and you got the sense that the performance part of the picture hadn't yet caught up with the perfect storm achieved on his last music release. But there was something undeniably compelling about the vision. You could see it reflected in the faces of the audience members, dancing to sounds they'd never heard but long anticipated.
